It is used to produce wood pellets, as well as pellets made from agricultural biomass or certain organic materials. However, choosing a pellet press involves more than just comparing motor power or theoretical capacity in kg\/h. The quality of the pellets depends on many factors: material moisture content, particle size, feed consistency, temperature, pressure, cooling, and storage. Before investing in a press, it is therefore essential to understand how pelletizing works and in which cases a simple press is sufficient\u2014or not.    <\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">What is a pellet press?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A pellet press, also known as a granule press, is a machine that transforms ground material into cylindrical pellets. <a href=\"https:\/\/proxipel.ch\/en\/miscanthus-pellets-a-sustainable-alternative-to-wood-for-energy\/\">It is used to compact various types of biomass, such as sawdust, wood chips, miscanthus, straw, and certain agricultural residues<\/a>. At the heart of the press is a key component: <strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">the die<\/span><\/strong>. This is a metal component with numerous holes. The prepared material is forced under high pressure through these holes by the press rollers. It is this passage through the die that forms the pellet. The die serves three main functions. First, it <strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">compresses the material<\/span><\/strong> : the rollers crush it against the die, then force it through the holes. This compression results in a pellet that is denser and more solid than the raw material. Second, it <strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">determines the pellet\u2019s diameter<\/span><\/strong> : the diameter of the holes corresponds to the final diameter of the pellet. For firewood pellets, the most common sizes are generally <strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">6 mm<\/span><\/strong> and <strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">8 mm<\/span><\/strong><b>.<\/b> Finally, the die helps ensure the <strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">binding of the pellet<\/span><\/strong>. As the material passes through the holes, friction is generated, causing the temperature to rise. In the case of wood, this heat helps soften the lignin naturally present in the material, which then acts as a natural binder. It is this phenomenon that allows the pellet to hold together without additives. The die directly influences the final quality of the pellets: their density, hardness, fines content, and length, as well as the press\u2019s productivity. The choice of die therefore depends on more than just the diameter of the holes.               We must also take into account the <strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">compression length<\/span><\/strong>\u2014that is, the effective depth of the hole through which the material passes. A die that is too short may produce brittle pellets. Conversely, a die that is too long will require more mechanical force, may cause overheating, and reduce production output. The pellet press is therefore the heart of the pelletizing process, but it will only function properly if the material is properly prepared beforehand. Before being pressed, the biomass must be ground to the correct particle size, dried to the correct moisture content, and fed into the machine at a steady rate.    <\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">How does a pellet press work?<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\">1. Preparing the Material<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The material must be uniform, free of any foreign matter, sorted by size, and sufficiently dry. Sawdust, wood shavings, straw, miscanthus, and agricultural residues do not behave in the same way. <\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\">2. Grinding<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To produce uniform pellets, the material must be ground finely enough before entering the press. The particle size must be appropriate for the diameter of the final pellet. For 6-mm pellets\u2014the most common size for heating pellets\u2014the desired particle size is generally between 3 and 6 mm. Material that is too coarse does not feed the press properly and results in irregular pellets. Conversely, material that is too fine will be difficult to compress. To grind and homogenize the material, <a href=\"https:\/\/proxipel.ch\/en\/proxiflex\/\">hammer mills<\/a> are generally used.     <\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\">3. Drying<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Moisture is one of the most critical factors in pellet production and must be carefully controlled. A properly dried pellet is more efficient, more stable, and more reliable in use. Moisture plays a decisive role in several key aspects of pellet quality. First, it affects the mechanical strength of the pellets: when the material remains too moist, the pellets become more brittle and can crumble during handling, storage, or transport. It also impacts the calorific value. The more water a pellet contains, the more of the energy produced during combustion is used to evaporate that water, rather than actually providing heat. Excessive moisture therefore leads to reduced energy efficiency. Another consequence is the quality of combustion. Pellets that are not dry enough burn less efficiently, which can increase ash formation, contribute to the buildup of deposits in boilers or stoves, and generate more emissions, particularly fine particulate matter. For wood and certain agricultural biomass sources such as miscanthus, the moisture content of the material before pressing should be around 10 to 15%. During the pressing process, friction and compression cause mechanical heating, which results in moisture loss. For heating pellets, the goal is to obtain, after pelletization and cooling, a stable pellet that generally has a final moisture content of about 8 to 10%. For agropellets, the tolerance is greater, with a moisture content below 12%.            <\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\">4. Compression<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The press compacts the material into a die. The choice of die, compression ratio, and settings depends on the material. As noted earlier, the diameter of the die holes determines the final diameter of the pellet. The most common diameters are 6, 8, 10, and 12 mm. But diameter alone is not enough. The compression length, known as the L\/D ratio, plays a crucial role. For example, for a 6-mm die, a 1:5 ratio corresponds to a compression channel of approximately 30 mm, while a 1:8 ratio corresponds to approximately 48 mm. The higher the L\/D ratio, the longer the material remains under pressure in the die. This can improve the pellet\u2019s density, hardness, and mechanical strength. On the other hand, excessive compression also increases the force required by the press, electricity consumption, heat generation, and die wear. It can also reduce production output. Conversely, a die that is too narrow does not compress the material sufficiently. The pellet may then be crumbly, brittle, or contain a high proportion of fines. In practice, the choice of die therefore depends heavily on the material being pelletized, and the L\/D ratios must be adjusted according to the type of biomass.             <\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 40px; text-align: justify;\">5. Cooling<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Compression generates heat. When they come out of the press, the pellets can reach 70 to 90\u00b0C, sometimes even higher depending on the materials and settings. At this stage, the pellets are still fragile. They must be cooled in order to:   <\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Stabilize its structure<\/li>\n<li>To harden<\/li>\n<li>Reducing residual moisture<\/li>\n<li>Minimizing Condensation During Storage<\/li>\n<li>Reduce the fines content.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">What types of pellet presses are there?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are several types of pellet presses, depending on the volume to be produced, the material to be processed, and the intended level of use. A small press designed for home use does not meet the same needs as a professional press integrated into a complete pelletizing line. <\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Small Electric Presses<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Small electric presses are generally used for testing, very small volumes, or one-off production runs. They may be of interest to individuals, small farms, or workshops that wish to process a small amount of sawdust, wood chips, or dry biomass. Their capacity remains limited. Depending on the model, they often produce between <strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">30 and 100 kg\/h<\/span><\/strong>, with power ratings generally ranging from <strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">3 and 7.5 kW<\/span><\/strong>. They require material that has already been properly prepared: dry, uniform, and finely ground. They are not suitable for wet or irregular materials.     <\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">PTO-powered balers<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They are used to produce pellets from agricultural or wood-based materials, provided that these materials are properly prepared beforehand. Again, the press does not replace grinding or drying. If the material is too wet or too coarse, the pellet quality will be poor and the output will drop rapidly.  <\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Professional Printing Presses<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Professional presses are designed for higher volumes. They may be suitable for regular production, local processing facilities, or structured agricultural projects. Their throughput can range from <strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">100 kg to 1 metric ton per hour<\/span><\/strong>, depending on the material and configuration. Installed power ratings are often between <strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">30 and 120 kW. <\/span><\/strong>At this level, the quality of material preparation becomes critical. Variations in moisture content, particle size that is too coarse, or an irregular feed can significantly reduce throughput and pellet quality.     <\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Industrial presses<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Industrial presses are designed for continuous production at much higher throughput rates. They are typically integrated into a <a href=\"https:\/\/proxipel.ch\/en\/technology\/\">complete pelletizing line that<\/a> includes grinding, drying, conveying, pressing, cooling, screening, and storage. They are suitable for structured projects involving large volumes and a clearly identified market. Throughputs generally start at around <strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">1 metric ton per hour<\/span><\/strong> and can reach several metric tons per hour. Installed power ratings often range between <strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">90 and 250 kW per press<\/span><\/strong><b>, or <\/b>even higher for very large units.    <\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">How much does a pellet press cost?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The price of a pellet press varies widely depending on its power, capacity, level of automation, and intended use. Small presses designed for home use or low-volume production are much more affordable than professional or industrial presses. Conversely, a complete pelletizing line represents a larger investment because it involves several steps: grinding, drying, conveying, pelletizing, cooling, and storage. It is therefore important to consider not only the purchase price of a press but also the total cost of pellet production: material preparation, energy, labor, maintenance, transportation, storage, and market access.   <\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Can pellets be produced from any type of biomass?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Not all materials can be pelletized in the same way. Some types of biomass compact easily, while others require precise adjustment of moisture content, particle size, temperature, or compression ratio. The presence of fibers, lignin, minerals, dust, or abrasive particles can significantly affect the outcome. Before undertaking any industrial or semi-industrial project, <em>it is therefore recommended to conduct characterization and pelletizing studies:<\/em> these tests help verify the intended use of the pellets, technical feasibility, expected productivity, the quality of the resulting pellets, and any necessary adjustments.   <\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Limitations of a Pellet Press Alone<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A pellet press alone may be sufficient when the material is already dry, clean, uniform, and properly ground. However, it quickly reaches its limits when the material is damp, inconsistent, or sourced from multiple locations. In practice, the main problems encountered are as follows:  <\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>material that is too damp;<\/li>\n<li>particle size too coarse;<\/li>\n<li>irregular eating habits;<\/li>\n<li>blockage of the die;<\/li>\n<li>high fines content;<\/li>\n<li>brittle pellet;<\/li>\n<li>lower-than-expected volume;<\/li>\n<li>significant handling requirements;<\/li>\n<li>difficulty in moving the material to a stationary unit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">That is why, for many biomass sources, the question is not just \u201cWhich press should we buy?\u201d, but rather \u201cWhere and how can we process the material under the right conditions?\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Fixed-line or mobile granulation unit: What&#8217;s the difference?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A fixed-line operation generally requires transporting the raw material to the production site. This solution may be appropriate for large, consistent volumes that are geographically concentrated. However, in many cases, deposits are scattered or too small, or the raw material\u2014which may be low-density or moist\u2014can be expensive to transport over long distances. The mobile granulation unit reverses this approach: instead of moving the material to the plant, it moves the plant to the material. This approach makes it possible to process on-site resources locally into pellets that are denser and easier to store, transport, and utilize.    <\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Proxipel: A Mobile Approach to Granulation<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Proxipel develops mobile pelletizing units capable of converting woody or organic biomass into pellets on site. The unit is equipped with an <strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">130-kW industrial press<\/span><\/strong>with a horizontal-axis annular die. It delivers an average throughput of approximately <strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">1 metric ton per hour for wood<\/span><\/strong>, which varies depending on the type of material. Upon exiting the press, the pellets are conveyed to the discharge point via a conveyor equipped with a vibrating screen, which separates the pellets from the fines. The fines are automatically recirculated back to the press to be reincorporated into the process. Compact and mobile, PROXIFLEX is immediately operational once installed on site. Before investing in a press or a complete production line, it is recommended to conduct tests on the available raw material and evaluate the overall cost of production.
